What Is HRV Balancing?

A Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system works by continuously drawing stale air out of your home while simultaneously supplying fresh, pre-warmed outdoor air. The heat from the outgoing stale air is transferred to the incoming fresh air via a heat exchanger core — meaning you get fresh air without losing the warmth you have already paid to generate.

Ductwork Visual Inspection
We trace supply and exhaust ductwork from the unit to every grille, checking for kinks, partial collapses, and poorly sealed joints. Even a small gap in a duct joint can allow warm indoor air to leak into the roof space before reaching the heat exchanger, dramatically reducing recovery efficiency.
Initial Airflow Measurement at Every Grille
Using a calibrated flow hood (or rotating vane anemometer for smaller grilles), we measure the actual airflow volume at every supply and exhaust grille. Readings are recorded in litres per second (L/s) for each location, establishing the current baseline across the whole system.
Fan Speed and Damper Adjustment
With baseline measurements recorded, we begin the balancing process. Most modern HRV units allow fan speed adjustment across supply and exhaust independently. We adjust fan speeds to bring total airflows as close to the design specification as possible, then fine-tune each individual grille using built-in dampers or adjustable louvres. This step is iterative.
Verification Measurements
Once the system is balanced, we take a full second set of measurements at every grille and confirm that supply and exhaust are within 10% of each other — the industry standard tolerance — and that each room is receiving at least its design minimum fresh air volume.
